Bethel Coffee Shop Owner Takes Spotlight as Musician

Bethel resident Wendy Cahill has lead a bit of a double life.

The owner of Molten Java, Cahill makes and serves coffee and other treats throughout the day. But she's had a long career as a musician and singer-songwriter -- dating all the way back to a performance at the Whatever Music Festival when she was all of eight. She grew up listening to folk-rock like Carole King and James Taylor, but says her own music tends a little more towards rock.

"Janis is who I would be most compared to," she says, referring to 60s icon Janis Joplin.

In the past, Cahill and her band Sans Cherubs have opened for rock legend like America, the Violent Femmes and the Animals' Eric Burden. This Saturday, she will open for Boston folk-rock mainstay Catie Curtis at Bridge Street Live in Collinsville, CT. Her proud father clued us in through an announcement posted on Patch.

"This is the first time I've performed a full set in a while -- like, years," she says. "When I moved Molten Java, I didn't have time. But I write all the time, and I'm constantly making new music -- I just haven't had time to play out."

In some ways, Molten Java has been a way for Cahill to keep a foot in the music world.

"Part of the reason I opened Molten Java was, having been a musician for so long, it was so daunting to play out especially when you're new at it ... I wanted people to have a place to start, and a place where they can come back."

And Cahill says she couldn't be happier to be serving coffee in Bethel.

"I couldn't do it in Danbury -- Bethel is a lot more vibrant!" she says. "There's a lot more going on here. People use the downtown a lot more here. and this is where I live, so I love this town."
