Newtown Historical Society invites you to its May Open House!&nbsp;Metal detector hobbyist and enthusiast Dave Wise will join us at the Matthew Curtiss House to share some of his historical artifact findings from over the years. Dave will discuss how he entered the field of historical excavation and show us what he has learned&nbsp;about early American life - including some lesser-known details that some may find surprising.&nbsp;Regardless of what part of American history interests you the most, you can be sure that Dave will have an artifact&nbsp;and a story to share!&nbsp;
Refreshments will be served. This event is free to the public, but donations are welcomed!

Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County (HFFC) welcomes Mike Allen, host and producer of the podcast Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path as their featured speaker on May 13, 2024 at the Wilton Quaker Meetinghouse. Mike Allen will describe the amazing tale of a Brookfield, CT, murder case that in 1981 included the defense “the devil made me do it.” Allen has insights to share since he covered the story as a journalist, and was also featured in the Netflix documentary about the case. 
Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut's Beaten Path is a weekly program of 20-minute vignettes about Connecticut's historic past. It's ranked among the top 5-10% of all podcasts in the United States. Mike's background includes ten years as News Director of radio stations in Brookfield, a stint as Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury, and a 25-year corporate career in communications and marketing. He currently lives in Danbury.
This meeting is free and open to all. Join us at the Wilton (Connecticut) Quaker Meeting House for the presentation and come to the social hour beforehand. Pizza and refreshments will be served from 6-6:45 PM. We will also be recording and broadcasting this meeting virtually via Zoom for anyone who is unable to join us in person. HFFC meets on the second Monday of each month.

Stony Hill Road & Old Hawleyville Road

The Sustainable Bethel Commission, a component of Bethel municipal government is organizing a walk audit. Sustainable Bethel commission functions to highlight, support and develop sustainable initiatives in the town of Bethel. One of our goals is promoting sustainable transportation options, such as walking, biking, and public transit. 
We are&nbsp;organizing a Walk Audit of STONY HILL ROAD / ROUTE 6 in Bethel, CT to document and capture the experiences of pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation riders and to find and recommend to the town more sustainable transit oriented development options. The objective is to improve safety, ease of access to local businesses, and quality of life for Bethel residents, organizations, and businesses in the Stony Hill area. The Bethel Walk Audit event has the support of Bethel’s First Selectman Dan Carter and Director of Economic Development Janice Chrzescijanek. The Walk Audit event would have Bethel Police and Fire department presence to ensure the safety of the volunteers and local workers, owners, and customers. 
The Sustainable Bethel Commission and Bethel residents will be taking a close study of the intersection at Stony Hill Road and Old Hawleyville Road and the surrounding area. We are notifying the community and inviting you to consider participating in the Bethel Walk Audit. Attached and below you will find the flyer for the event and more information about what a walk audit entails. Tickets are $85 for Adults &amp; $1 for Children 18 yrs old and younger. Food for the event will be provided by FLIK Independent School Dining and will feature a “Smok’d Food Truck”. In addition to a great meal, each guest will receive two free beverages from Reverie’s large craft beer selection. Soft drinks and water will also be available at no charge.

The event will feature live music from the popular band, ODDFELLAS, out of Stratford, CT. Guests can also enjoy various outdoor games including the dual hoop zone donated by Super Fun Inflatables.
The live and silent auctions are among the event highlights and include incredible local art and other gifts and services. The hottest and most exclusive items of the evening are Ben's Bells mosaic benches - available ONLY at the Celebration of Kindness each year. Also returning to the silent auction are mosaic stepping stones designed and built by Ben’s Bells amazing volunteers! 
A special Shop KIND pop-up shop will be open for all of your KIND shopping needs. Special to Celebration of Kindness, 30 limited edition necklaces will be available for purchase.
We also look forward to presenting our Community Kindness Awards to two deserving recipients.
