Firefighters from Newtown, Stepney, Trumbull, Easton, and more fight massive fire on Judd Road.
The sounds of explosives and fireworks rocked the quiet wooded neighborhood of Easton bordering on Monroe on Friday. A tall pillar of smoke seen for miles away heralded the fire to many, who followed trucks to the corner of North Street and Judd Road. Chief of Police James Candee said the owner’s collection of explosives hampered the ability of the firefighters to approach the house and fight the fire. The owner of the house, Sandy Cooper, 507 Judd Road, Easton, was not known to be at the scene, but police officers said that all family members were safe and not in the house. "It was a beautiful house; huge," said Ted Tallcouch, who was cutting the grass across the street when the Deputy Fire Marshall pulled into the yard, parked, and ran …

Bethel High Students took Best Overall in the EMT Olympics
A woman lay face down on the ground, blood and pieces of metal covered her chest. The flashing red and blue lights of the emergency vehicles were the only lights the EMT team had to work in. The team had never worked together before, but today they had to put their collective knowledge to work, because every second, every action mattered. “An ether explosion rocked the South Street Fire Department, injuring two to four patients,” the station leader told the students of four high schools at the start of the Third Annual EMT Olympics. When the New Milford, Redding, Bethel and New Fairfield students arrived on the scene, they were told to go upstairs to grab their equipment and when they came down, they found there were actually six to…
A gathering at the fire house celebrated good times spent with Hurgin.
Leonard “Link” Hurgin is moving to Florida, and he said he is perhaps the first Hurgin in 150 years to leave Bethel for another state. Hurgin won’t be leaving easily, even though he is looking forward to his retirement. The South Street Fire Department held an informal going away party for fireman Link, and his wife, Cathy. Hurgin was moved to tears when one of the fire fighters handed him his fire gear, which he would take with him to Florida. Hurgin made his way around the rooom, hugging one old friend after the next until Fire Chief Fred Ingram called Hurgin to present him with a plaque that read, 35 Years of Excellent Service. According to Ingram, Hurgin was the oldest member on the roster and had twice been named Fireman …

The U.S. Attorney's Office describes the alleged use of 'Gifting Tables.'
Three Connecticut women have been charged with operating what the U.S. Attorney's office says is a pyramid scheme known as "Gifting Tables." Donna Bello, 55, of Guilford, Jill Platt, 64 of Guildford, and Bettejane Hopkins, 66, of Essex, were arrested on Wednesday after an 18-count federal indictment charged them with conspiracy, and tax and wire fraud. “The indictment alleges that the three defendants ran a pyramid scheme designed to enrich themselves at the expense of other participants,” said U.S. Attorney David B. Fein. “In addition, the indictment alleges that the defendants tried to use the pretext of ‘Gifting Tables’ as a way to avoid paying taxes on the substantial illegal proceeds of their scheme. The investigation into this …

I live in Monroe, a short distance from the Judd Rd. Hattertown Rd. intersection. I heard the sounds of explosions for more like 30+ minutes. It was frigentening, I can't imagine that anyone would have that quantity of explosives in a family neighborhood (or any neighborhood for that matter)! That person was irresponsible, it is a terrible shame that they lost their home, but there is an …   more ›
