I wish Janis all the best in her new job. There are forces in Hartford that will render her somewhat…Read More ineffective. The climate and culture in Connecticut is anti small business, witness the tax structure. There are many vacant stores especially along Greenwood Avenue. I hope Janis doesn't solve the problem by adding more pizza parlors or a McDonalds next to Burger King.

"Chrzescijanek previously served as a member of the Bethel Board of Education, as well as a…Read More director of the Bethel Education Foundation and co-chair of the Rockwell Elementary PTO. She earned an undergraduate degree in Biology from Southern Connecticut State University and a Masters in Health Services Administration from Iona College."
Other than being Knickerbocker's crony, can someone explain what makes her qualified for this position? How many other candidates were interviewed? Was the job posted publicly?

Paul, Unfortunately you are correct that there are far greater forces at play for this new role to…Read More be sucessful. It was only last August that Governor Malloy was in town to celebrate the expansion of cannondale in Bethel and now he's paying them to leave. When our states leaders cannibalize our local economies it doesn't bode well for us overall. Valid point about educating local property owners on the value of having sucessful tennants to their property value.

I am sure the young lady is a sweet heart but lets not kid ourselves. This is another example of how…Read More things are done in this little town. The only way you get hired is by being a member of the Democratic Town Committee or the son or daughter of a democratic Town Committee member. Is it corruption? Some would say yes but that is the way this little town operates. Of course the chairman of the board of Ed will cheer this appointment. Correct me if I am wrong is this not the third former board of Ed member to be hired in this town in the last few years. I am sure her qualifications make her a great PTO chairman , But Economic Development Director? How vast can her experience be? Has she been a CEO? Has she build her own business from the ground up and employed few dozen people? Does she have Grant writing experience? Any experience in working with legislators and community leaders to fund and build projects?

Glad they could find a reasonable rent. The property owners in downtown Bethel ought to take a qeue…Read More from the Shoe Repair's new landlord. Charge a reasonable rent and your properties won't always be vacant!

Nothing wrong with this beautiful work of art. Nothing insensitive about it either. It was not the…Read More AR that caused the tragedy but the evil deranged person. I was just as devastated by the tragedy as most people and I still carry a heavy heart about it but in no way do I identify the AR with it.

While I do like the spirit shop idea... Agreed, Hoorah. More bookstores. More bookstores for all!

Another independent bookstore. We've got four in the downtown right now and once you reach a certain…Read More number, it just attracts more people from far around. Woodbury has all the antiques. New York has the various districts where businesses of specific types cluster. We've got four independent bookstores, some more independent bookstores would likely boost business for everyone. Scotland does actually have a book town: http://www.wigtown-booktown.co.uk/
Things related to that would also work, like a bookbinder, scrapbooking place, small press, etc.
For those going "four bookstores, where!?!" they are:
Byrd's Books- over Molten Java in Dolan plaza (local authors, new)- http://byrdsbooks.com/
Camelot Bookshop- PT Barnum Square (history & military, fiction & nonfiction, used)
Relay Bookhouse- corner across from Famous Pizza- (rare books)
Rainy Day Paperback- next to Citgo and Bethel Printing- (paperbacks, foreign language, children's books, used) http://www.rainydaypaperback.com

All sports Booster club probably raises a fair amount from selling spirit wear, good idea, but might…Read More hurt their fundraising efforts.

Took all our friendly retailers long enough to come out of the Dark Ages and finally give in to…Read More Sunday sales, didn't it? They paid Lobby Groups MILLIONS of dollars to keep that scam going for years and inconvenience CT residents...as well as send MILLIONS in taxes to NY, RI and MA....thank you so much! How many more teachers could we have hired with all those tax dollars? How many poor people could we have helped out just a little bit more? All so you guys could have your Sundays off! Now, force the Governor to LOWER prices and take off your "protected" profits with minimum pricing! Join the 21st Century and compete for your business.
