Urban Archeologist: Video Dig Report No. 2

Greg looks through the "junk," and brings us along.

Here is my second video “dig” report. Coincidentally it is another New Milford estate sale. This was a sale where I was told, “It’s all junk!” Although any sale can have its inventory of useless pieces, I find that the location itself is often more important than what’s for sale.

There are homes in every town in Connecticut that still have history yet to give up. This home was on an older street (Treadwell) in New Milford and much of it had not been updated in a very long time. The home was in good shape and seemed to have only had one owner. The personal history was noticeable on all three floors.

I found what I was looking for in the basement — a trove of old books — the only disappointment was that some were covered in mold. As I dug, I found one of the best pieces of local history I could have hoped for. You have to watch the video to see.

There will be another sale here this weekend (Aug. 11) and if you want to see a well preserved New Milford home, stop by and take a look. There is a second sale, which was featured in on Priscilla Dr also in New Milford.

Back on the blog you see a great sample of a movie handbill form the 1930s. take a look and see if you believe how inexpensive it was to see a movie back then.

Greg Van Antwerp is a Brookfield resident and blogger, who can be found on the weekends in search of a good “dig” or a good story.  You can read more about his adventures by visiting his blog.

Jessica, what do you mean 'when society lets them down'? I'm struggling to understand what you areRead More trying to convey... Please elaborate if you can.

"Bethel teachers are not only educating students, but when society lets kids down, it’sRead More teachers who step in to fill the gap." Explain to me how an average salary of $60,000 per year for working 183 days during that year and an EXTREMELY generous retirement package (compared to the 240 a year the rest of us have to work) considered "society letting them down"?

It was a great job Mike and the EDC did on keeping the jobs from Cannondale from leaving Bethel. TooRead More bad Paul Z. won't have the guts to ask you about it on this "lively" show.

Billy: Since I don't own a beat up 1998 Honda (rather, a non-beat up, rather nice, rather newRead More European sedan) does that mean I would have been immune to the seduction of the reduction in my property taxes? Just trying to follow your logic here...
