Did you ever dream about traveling back in time? One of
the many pleasures I get from Urban Archeology are the trips I can take to 50,
75, 100 or more years ago anytime I want. I only need to open a magazine or
newspaper from that period.
At a book sale, you can often find a table, section, or
entire room designated for old papers, periodicals, etc. This is where I
uncovered The Elks official magazine above.
Only available to members and their families who
subscribe, these issues don’t surface often, but upon inspection they look as
well produced as Life magazine. The covers from the issues of the 1920’s – 30’s
rival those of the Saturday Evening Post.
The Elks are among the many fraternal organizations that
established themselves with the goal of Patriotism, Charity, Fidelity, etc.,
and raise money to aid children or address needs within the communities their
The ads within each are a wonderful snapshot of
come-ons and other enticements that a male mature target audience must
have wanted. Learning to play a saw or become a “Foot Correctionist” were just
a few of the many ads within each. Click
here to see more ads and more of these colorful covers.
