Wildcat Swimmers Compete in SWC Championships

Team achieved many personal best swims.

The Bethel Wildcats swimming and diving team took tenth place at the 2011 SWC Swimming and Diving Championship meet on March 4, 2011 at Masuk High School. The Wildcats, who got their first win in two seasons on Valentine’s day, had several personal best performances at the meet. They also were able to beat New Milford, who narrowly beat them earlier this season.

“We had a lot of great swims tonight,” said Coach Katie McGowan. “Tucker Bjornson, he swims year round, which is great. He dropped four seconds in his backstroke, which automatically qualified him for states. He also dropped six seconds in the 200 IM.”

“Andrew Guercio dropped four seconds in the 100 breaststroke. Kenny Darrah dropped 13 seconds in the 500," McGowan said. "James Canfield dropped his time in the 500. Brian Sjblom, his relay dropped 2 seconds. Sarah Whalen did close to a personal best at the meet.”

Rebecca Jones took 12th out of 18 divers in the diving competition. This is her first year diving, and her 12th place finish was despite a failed dive, which failed to earn her points. She will be competing at the State Diving meet on Wednesday.

Tucker Bjornson is the only swimmer that has automatically qualified for states.  However, the top 36 swimmers in each event will make the qualifying round of states.  Those results will be compiled this week and the state competitors will be announced. McGowan said she hopes that dropping a class at the state level will help her team’s chances of placing more swimmers in the state meet.
