Whiz Team: Bethel 9s Are Heading to Fenway

After the teams New England Regional win, the Bethel 9s will receive a special award at Fenway Park.

These 9 and a few newly 10-year-olds set a goal to win, not just play but to win.

Now with eyes on the World Championship prize one day, these boys dream of lush green diamonds and the smell of leather.

Luke Lacey, a member of the team, said: "We had to beat their best pitchers and hitters. Through hard work and team work we did. And had some fun doing it. It's great to be a champion."

Helping support the recent New England win are MLB teams the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Bethel's team will be heading to Fenway Park on Tuesday, Sept. 20 for a special ceremony at 6 p.m. and to enjoy the game as a team. That night, the Red Sox are scheduled to play the Baltimore Orioles at 7:10 p.m. The Yankees are sending a care package for all players to share.

Team member Justin Amendola said: "It feels awesome to be a champion. We worked hard as a team and peaked at the right time. The hard work paid off."

"It all started nine months ago with our winter workouts. The extra throws, swings, and running we did paid off in the end," Coach John Amendola added. "And for the first time in 18 years we have brought the prize back to Bethel. It's a been a great ride for everyone involved."

"I was so excited to win regionals," said team member Jack Carraturo Hartman. "I knew that we could do it. I was so happy that we beat Danbury."

Assistant Coach Jim Lacey said the team's success was playing as a unit. "Our success is due to the dedication of the parents, kids and league," He said. "It was a collaborative effort by all. It involved a lot of sweat and hard work. The end result was all worth it."
