Girls Track Defeats Bunnell, Notre Dame-Fairfield; Edged By Pomperaug

Team set many personal records en route to a successful meet.

The Bethel Wildcats Girls Track and Field Team hosted Pomperaug, Bunnell, and Notre Dame-Fairfield Tuesday afternoon at Bethel High School.  The Wildcats ran their way to two wins against Bunnell and Notre Dame, and lost a close meet to Pomperaug.

Despite the loss to Pomperaug, Coach Christopher Ciparelli said his team had two “good wins” over Bunnell and Notre Dame-Fairfield.  Pomperaug won nine events, Bethel won six and Bunnell three.  Bethel took home wins in the 400m, 300m hurdles, 200m, 3200m, 4X400 relay and the discus.

Lucy Daniels won the 400m in just over a minute, coming in at 63 seconds.

Lizzie Morton won the 300m hurdles with a time of 47.4.  She will attend Sacred Heart this fall and run track there.

Deanna Weiner won the 200m with a time of 26.7.

Victoria Maceira used the final lap of her 3200 meter race to take over first place from Pomperaug.  She turned in a time of 12:43.4. Bethel’s Sarah Whalen came in third in the event.

Ciparelli recognized Maceira’s accomplishments on the day. “In the 3200, Victoria Maceira, she’s a freshman, had a great day,” Ciparelli said.  “In the past few meets she has taken about 30 seconds off her time. She went from just qualifying for SWC’s, to just being four seconds off of qualifying for states. She ran a 12:43.4, and state qualifying is 12:40.”

The 4X400 relay team of Daniels, Alex Hernandez, Weiner and Morton won in a time of 4:18.3.  Morton had a sizeable lead going into the final lap, and was able to keep the margin for victory despite Pomperaug’s anchor runner’s quick start.

Becca Leinhardt threw the discus 91’ 8” to round out Bethel’s victories at the meet.

The Wildcats had numerous PR’s, or personal records, at the meet.  “We really had a good all around day,” said Ciparelli.  “Our 4X400 ran the fastest time this season- 4:18.3.  We had a number of girls run state qualifying times in the 100M.  Our 4X800 ran a PR as well.”

“It is getting to the point in the season where you expect to see PR’s, and you expect to see times fall,” Ciparelli said.  “It is all starting to kick in.  We have one more meet here next week, and then we have SWC here.”

Next week, Bethel will host Joel Barlow, New Fairfield and Immaculate. Ciparelli said he knows his girls will be going up against some of the best in the SWC, just as his team is starting to hit its stride.  He said: “We have Barlow in the next meet, and they’re kind of a powerhouse. We’re going to give them everything we have.”

In timed sports such as swimming and diving, and of course track and field, the regular season is meant to give your athletes a chance to qualify for the South West Conference Championships and Connecticut State Championships at the end of the season.

Coach Ciparelli hopes his team’s hard work this season will translate into a good showing in the post season.  “Right now, I want us to have a good team record, but I really want to see the girls setting PR’s all over the place.  I want to get as many girls in SWC’s and states as we can.”
