Bethel Football looks to improve season

Coming off a playoff bid last year, Bethel High looks to make it once again in the State Finals

With only three games into the season, the Bethel High School football team is off to a rough start, but is pushing to succeed.

Currently the Wildcats have a 1-2 record, losing to Bunnell 27-54 on Sept. 17, winning its first home game against Newtown 34-28 on Sept. 25, only to losing against Pomperaug, 14-35 the following week.

Head Coach Jason Gill said the team is staying positive to increase momentum. "We have had a lot of injuries this year to key positions and players, some of which are seniors," Gill said. "Keeping the team healthy and getting players back into rotation is key."

As for the game against Bunnell, Gill said the team made too many mistakes and gave up some big plays and plans on working on reading the opponent's offense plays better to prevent scoring.

Despite a trouble with ball security, Gill said: "Newtown was a great win for the program. It showed the team that hard work  and dedication can pay off in a big game. We were able to move the ball and control the clock, which are two essentials to our being successful." Pictures from the Newtown game are featured to the left.

After the loss against Pomperaug, Gill said overall future games will require better control over the line of scrimmage and working on correcting consistent mistakes.

Tomorrow, the Bethel Wildcats will play Notre Dame tomorrow at home (temporarily the Danbury High School field) at 7 p.m. The complete football schedule is available on BHS athletics website
