Viewfinder: St. Mary's School Dedicates New Playing Field

St. Mary's celebrated its new field Wednesday afternoon.

Around noon on Wednesday, St. Mary's School celebrating a grand opening of it's new playing field, put together by the St. Mary community. Students grades K-8 went outside to enjoy the field and enjoy the new field, playing soccer, jump rope, racing and also had an ice cream social at the end of the day.

Sister Anne McCarthy, principal, and Father Corey Piccinino were instrumental in getting the field funded for, cleared and seeded for the lawn. Steve DeMarco, parishioner and parent at St. Mary, did the actual work.

"Steve DeMarco was the one who raised most of the money for the field with the Annual Golf Outing, held each fall and Father Corey Piccinino, pastor, supplemented it," McCarthy said. "Steve did all the arrangements to get the field cleared and did some volunteer work up there, as well as Dave Pijnenburg, who graciously put the water sprinklers in."

In the past, the children would only have blacktop recess for ball playing. The new field will increase the offerings available to St. Mary's physical education program and can now be used by the school's track and field team.

"Bethel teachers are not only educating students, but when society lets kids down, it’sRead More teachers who step in to fill the gap." Explain to me how an average salary of $60,000 per year for working 183 days during that year and an EXTREMELY generous retirement package (compared to the 240 a year the rest of us have to work) considered "society letting them down"?
