The Science Fair of the Future: CT Student Innovation Expo This Saturday!

THE SCIENCE FAIR OF THE FUTURE! Students From Across The State Display Projects From New Phone Apps to Medical Diagnostic Microchips at The Student Innovation Expo 2012!

HARTFORD - (May 19, 2012) - If there is an app for creativity and hard work, the students involved in The Student Innovation Expo 2012 must have downloaded it! Students from 35 schools statewide will compete in the categories of: Business Plan, ePortfolio, eCommerce, Film, App Design, Marketing Materials, Website Design, Team Leader, Team Player and More!

Over 2,000 students will descend on Hartford’s XL Center for the day-long event, held May 19. There is no cost to attend the Expo and it is open to the public. Feel free to wander the interactive booths - which past teams have decorated with entire live trees, fully-attired mascots, film screens, free swag and more - and view PowerPoint-style presentations in the auditorium before the awards ceremony at the end of the day.

Winners will be chosen by a host of business professionals, university faculty and science-and-technology experts. Distinguished guests such as Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman will be on-hand to celebrate these cutting-edge students’ achievements.

The Expo is presented by The Center for 21st Century Skills @ EDUCATION CONNECTION. It’s not only a chance for students to gain confidence, credibility and a perk for their college resumes - it’s also a chance to meet new friends from across Connecticut and share ideas.

The Expo is the culmination of a year-long endeavor for the students. Among this year’s 700 entries are projects on healthcare adaptability including: Breast Cancer Vaccinations and Hospital Hallucinations. Other exciting projects include: Diagnostic Microchips and an App to allow students to report bullying anonymously to school administrators that is being beta-tested within one state school.

The Center for 21st Century Skills @ EDUCATION CONNECTION partners with CPEP (Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program) to present The Student Innovation Expo 2012. CPEP is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and has expanded from a pre-engineering program into a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)-education based organization.

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT! Never Before Seen Student- Designed Phone Apps Will Debut at The Student Innovation Expo 2012 at Hartford’s XL Center.

Just when you think you’ve seen every phone App - from photo manipulating apps, to store sale updates to horoscopes, weather, traffic and beyond - there is a new one on the market. No matter what you seem to need - or didn’t know you needed - its seems there is someone designing an App for it - some cool, some useful, some silly - and almost all successful and leaving us going “gee whiz!”

Some of these Apps of the future are being designed by Connecticut’s most innovative high school students - who will debut their techie projects at The Student Innovation Expo 2012 on May 19.

Adam Scott, Technology Educator & Technology Integration Specialist at New Haven’s Metropolitan Business Academy, reported on some of the projects completed by the Research Design & Development (RD2) students.  “This year's RD2 class has created an app designed to allow students to report bullying anonymously to school administrators. It is a real and working app, written in HTML5. The students will be beta testing the app within our own school by late April.”

Last year our students created an app designed to connect CT residents with their local farmers markets by helping them locate markets and finding seasonal recipes.

Students initially get involved because it is an interesting opportunity to work with new and exciting technology. They continue to stay involved as they see their project develop from idea to a real and working prototype. There is very much a feeling in the classroom that we are making something real and it reflects how teams work in the real world.

The Expo is a very transformative event. The students always leave with a great sense of pride in the work they have done. The sense of team is always really strong after the Expo and students really feel a sense of ownership for the work they have done.
