Tip o’ the Cap

A special THANK YOU to BHS EMT instructor Sherri Holmberg for organizing the EMT Olympics at the South Street Firehouse. As it has become the tradition, Bethel students performed exceptionally well in this competition and put their knowledge to the test in authentic scenarios arranged by Ms. Holmberg and her EMT colleagues. Additional Thank You’s go to the many men and women in the emergency services community for supporting this event and making the experience so meaningful for students. This event was another reminder of what a wonderfully strong community Bethel is.

Message from the Board of Education

To all parents, guardians and supporters of Bethel Public Schools:

Subject: Board of Education Statement on the 2012-2013 Education Budget

On April 10th the Board of Finance, in a 5:2 vote, reinstated $250,000 to the Board of Education budget. This is very good news!

Dr. Smith, Superintendent of Bethel Schools, during Public Commentary at the April 10th Board of Finance meeting, advised the Board of Finance that this amount of money will allow us to preserve all current teaching positions and the Summer School remedial program for Grades 1-5 that were identified for elimination in response to the BOF’s original $400,000 budget reduction. The restoration of this money preserves our status quo budget and allows us to remain on our current quality trajectory. Restoring the $400,000 cut from the budget was clearly the outcry heard from education supporters attending the Public Hearing on April 4th. The Board of Education is hopeful the remaining $150,000 budget gap can be closed through additional cost savings in health care and the careful expenditure of funds during the remainder of the current school year. The Board of Education and our School Administration take our role as stewards of taxpayer dollars very seriously. All budget lines are examined and re-examined in light of priorities and needs.

Mr. Kingston, Chairman of the Board of Finance, said "I think the fact that he (Dr. Smith) continued to think through his needs and didn't press for the restoration of the full $400,000 speaks to me of his honesty and willingness to do what is best for the town ... I couldn't be more impressed with him and his actions."

The next step in the budget process is the Town Meeting on the 2012-2013 Town and School budgets scheduled for May 7th at 7:30pm in the Bethel High School auditorium. All residents are strongly encouraged to review the education budget information on our School District website (http://www.bethel.k12.ct.us). Concurrently, the BOE is asking parents and guardians to attend the Town Meeting. Attendees, who would be inclined to do so, are encouraged to speak on behalf of the amended Board of Education budget, and to vote for that budget. Remember the amended education budget ($39,660,925 which now includes the $250,000 add-back) can only be approved or reduced by a majority vote of the attendees at the Town Meeting.

The final step of the budget process, once the budgets are set at the Town meeting, is the referendum which will occur later in May. Here again we need support of the education budget on voting day. Please remember, your vote and every vote counts!

Congratulations to our Third Grade Top Inventors: Michael VanDeWater, Kaitlyn Mattera, Audrey Keener from Rockwell and Berry Schools! On Saturday, April 28th, they traveled to the UConn School of Engineering to compete in the Connecticut Invention Convention, the longest running competition for young inventors in the country. Over 700 hundred students from 130 schools across Connecticut converged to present and defend their inventions in judging circles composed of their peers and judges from science and engineering fields.

Their day began with keynote speaker, Rachael Manzer, who is president of the Connecticut Science Teachers Association and one of seven teachers in the nation chosen to fly into space on a commercial spacecraft as part of the Teachers in Space Program. After judging the students were able to participate in organized learning activities and interact with students from the School of Engineering. Our students were each recognized for their inventions and made our schools very proud!

The EMT Olympics was a great day! Bethel took 1st place in the Academic Challenge and 1st place in the Cash Ambulance event. Mike Kaluta earned 1st place in scenario assessment; Brian Bergen earned 2nd place and Brian Wille 3rd place. Chuck Bosworth placed 3rd in Individual Knowledge. 2nd place went to New Milford and 1st to Joel Barlow. Thank you to everyone who helped. We are very proud of them.

“When the uncapped potential of a student meets the liberating art of a teacher a miracle unfolds” – Mary Hatwood Futrell

This week we celebrate our unsung heroes. Our teachers routinely put others before self and labor to challenge and inspire our young to see beyond the horizon a brighter future. Bethel is exceptionally fortunate to have such a highly professional, responsible, and dedicated group of teachers working in our schools. Please find a moment this week to say thank you.

The business of teaching is carried forward...because some individuals of extraordinary vitality and strength of personality engage in it and the fire that helps to guide them kindles the spirits of the young people whose lives they touch. - Woodrow Wilson
