Bethel Parents Warned About ABC Eraser Challenge

At least a dozen middle school students have tried the challenge, which can lead to deep lacerations and scarring.

Bethel Middle School principal Derek Muharem sent an email to parents Thursday warning them about ABC Eraser Challenge, a dare where kids rub pencil erasers vigorously on their arms and compare the damage.

The challenge causes pain and severe irritation, and can often break the skin and lead to bleeding and scarring.

Along with the note [see below], Muharem also passed along a link to a television news report on the issue posted online 2 years ago.

[There are also videos on YouTube of kids trying the eraser challenge, in various forms, however none met our standards for publishing, in terms of profanity.]

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I want to make you aware of a troubling "activity" that teens across America are getting involved in. It is called the Eraser Challenge. To date, we have had a dozen Bethel Middle School students engage in this very unsafe activity.

Students have explained the Eraser Challenge this way: kids take an eraser and begin "erasing" their skin while saying the alphabet and coming up with a word for each letter.  Once they get to the letter Z, they stop and then compare the injury to their friends.

Most students use their arms to do this, from their elbow to their wrist — however it can be anywhere on their body.

Please take the time to talk to your child about this to make sure they are not involved in this ridiculous and unsafe act.

Also, please see this link [or watch above] with more information. You can also find out more information on the internet.

Thank you,
Mr. Muharem
