Reasons to Relay #8 -- Community

Relay For Life is a community event focused on putting an end to cancer.

The 2013 Relay For Life of Bethel is an overnight, grassroots fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  This year's event will take place on Saturday, June 8.  Since it's 2013, we'll be sharing 13 reasons why YOU should join us at Relay For Life.  Reason #8 is Community.

Relay For Life is, in every sense of the word, a community event.

The Planning Committee is made up of volunteers from the local community.  They work with an American Cancer Society staff partner to organize and operate the Relay For Life event itself, along with the various meetings and events leading up to Relay.

Relay For Life teams are made up of members of the local community.  This year's teams include schools (including the Johnson Jaguars and the IHS Couch Potatoes), churches (such as St. Thomas' and Walnut Hill), clubs (the MOMS Club of Bethel and the Danbury Ski Club), and coworkers (from Danbury Hospital and the BI Bees).  Some teams, like the Pink Ladies, are groups of friends looking to join together in the fight against cancer.  Still others, like G.I. Jane, are friends and family Relaying in honor of a loved one.

Team and individuals put on events in the local community to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  So far, teams have had Zumba nights, bake sales, Road Rallies, book swaps, and any number of raffles and drawings.

And, of course, there's the event itself.  All of these members of the community come together for one purpose -- to take part in the fight against cancer.

Won't you join your community in this fight on June 8th?
