Reasons to Relay #2 -- Education

Education is key to preventing, detecting, and living with cancer.

The 2013 Relay For Life of Bethel is an overnight, grassroots fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  This year's event will take place on Saturday, June 8.  Since it's 2013, we'll be sharing 13 reasons why YOU should join us at Relay For Life.  Reason #2 is Education.

It's been said that "knowledge is power."  With that in mind, part of the American Cancer Society's mission is to educate the public about preventing, detecting, treating, and living with cancer.  Last year, $150 million -- money raised at events like Relay For Life -- was spent on prevention information and education.

The ACS estimates that nearly two-thirds of all cancer types can be prevented through simple lifestyle choices such as avoiding tobacco, improving diet, being physically active, and using sunscreen.  Want to make a healthy choice?  Come walk with us on June 8 -- and bring your sunscreen!

The American Cancer Society knows that the earlier cancer is detected, the better the chance of successful treatment.  That's why the ACS encourages routine self-exams as well as regular physicals with your doctor.  The ACS recommends annual mammograms for women starting at age 40, and men should get a colonoscopy at age 50.

A cancer diagnosis often results in a flood of questions, and the American Cancer Society is available with answers.  The ACS website, www.cancer.org, is full of basic cancer information as well as details on specific types of cancers.  In addition, nearly one million people received live assistance last year via the ACS's 24-hour helpline, 1-800-ACS-2345.

Please join us on June 8 to learn more about what you can to do prevent cancer and help spread the American Cancer Society's education mission.
