U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Obama Healthcare Plan

The justices also found that the so-called "individual mandate" in what's become known as Obamacare, is constitutional.

In a landmark decision, both legally and politically, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld President Barack Obama's sweeping healthcare law, including the central mandate that individuals must buy health insurance.

Pundits and politicians alike are already heralding the decision as a major political boon to Obama, whose supporters were concerned that an overturn of the law, or just the individual mandate, would harm the president's re-election bid this year.

Obama's health care law, which also requires health insurers to provide coverage to children of policy holders up to 26 years old and bans insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, was challenged by several states who argued that some of its conditions, particularly the individual mandate, were unconstitutional.

Republicans also had vehemently opposed the health care law and their presumptive presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, has vowed to seek its repeal if he's elected.

So they call it a "tax" and not a forced payment. Interesting. Today is a dark day indeed. Our rights have just been trampled upon, like pearls before swine.

The old media is hailing this as a victory for Obama. For Obama. Not for the American people. Remember, it is all about him, not you or your well-being. "In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Supreme Court decided to uphold his signature health care law's individual insurance mandate in a 5-4 decision, upending speculation after hostile-seeming oral arguments in March that the justices would overturn the law." http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/supreme-court-issue-obamacare-decision-135554880.html

A dark day indeed for US citizens. The only thing that this country can do is to "roll him out in November". He consistantly tramples the constitution and Bill of Rights. It's always been his way or the highway. I'm concerned for the future of my children and grandchildren.

In President Obama's own words, he tells George Stephanopoulas that his ObamaCare mandate is not a tax. From September 20, 2009. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2009/09/obama-mandate-is-not-a-tax/ Excerpt: (the smoking gun) STEPHANOPOULOS: But you reject that it’s a tax increase? OBAMA: I absolutely reject that notion.

You and me both, Skip. I wonder what will happen when we can no longer render unto Caesar because we have nothing left to render. What happens, then?
Bill Hillman June 28, 2012 at 04:09 PM
It's not a tax, it's a "penalty" enforced by the IRS. ok, it's tax.

While life goes on all over the country with wildfires to the West and flooding to the South, the Supreme Court made their historic decision on Obamacare. The Chief justice changed the wording from the bench (over reaching authority?) to make the individual mandate a tax and the rest of it was approved 5 - 4. Since Nancy Pelosi had said "We have to pass this bill to know what's in it," I wonder whether they all actually took the time to read the whole thing? As someone said, "Bureaucrats will never be finished rewriting this and interpreting it" and the government will now force Americans to purchase what they don't want to or are religiously opposed to paying for through a tax. Obamacare has far reaching affects to shape our country, our individual liberties, our healthcare, the healthcare field, our economy etc. for years to come. As someone said in the live stream..."This is a tragic day for healthcare in the United States." In actuality, I think it is a tragic day for America.

With this ruling, we have just moved from being We the People to being Royal Subjects, for surely this decision reeks of the tyrannical scent of Kingly Arrogance. To those responsible: Brace yourselves for the imminent backlash to your arrogance. Today you decided against the majority will of The People. You have awoken a sleeping giant, indeed. I can see November 2012 from here.

"Despite this intentional front-loading of consumer friendly, popular provisions of the law, most of the American public either doesn't like or has no opinion on the law. Most people said they wanted the Supreme Court to strike down all or part of the law in a recent poll." The majority will of the people was violated and ignored. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/supreme-court-issue-obamacare-decision-135554880.html http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57462689/public-opinion-of-the-health-care-law/ http://thehill.com/blogs/healthwatch/health-reform-implementation/231547-poll-finds-strong-support-for-ruling-against-health-law-individual-mandate Enough said.

What is amusing to me is that everyone is all wadded up over this Obamacare ruling... I think that no one being held accountable for the economic meltdown is a bigger issue. My taxpayer money went right into some rich bank exec's pocket and I still owe a poop load more on my mortgage than my house is worth. I think our politician's in general all need to go... fed, state and local... but it'll never happen. My $0.02...

And one more thing... please be sure to hydrate well, keep your pets inside and check on elderly neighbors during this heat wave coming in. Happy commenting...

Eric, Part of, a big part, the economic meltdown is ObamaCare. It is 1/6th of our economy, and now it falls on us to pay it. But I do see your point, indeed. Have you ever wondered if there are just too many damn things wrong with government to keep track of and monitor?
Eric T Gray June 28, 2012 at 05:55 PM
Donald, yes I've wondered that exact thing... then I start to get scared/ticked so I have to stop!
Carl June 28, 2012 at 06:54 PM
Donald, So you're saying the credit markets predicted ACA two years before it's inception? Wow, that's some prescience!

Someone has tweeted that people in Unions are not under Obamacare. Is that true? We know that the politicians have their own Cadillac healthcare as most likely do the Justices. None are under Obamacare. How can they legislate, dictate, and meter out America's healthcare without being under its "rule" themselves? That has to change. If they want socialized healthcare, they need to have the same healthcare as the rest of the American population or be out of touch with the masses like during the French Revolution, "Let them eat cake." Recently it took two different letters 9 days to arrive in CT from CA through the postal service. If the government can't make the USPS operate efficiently, how do they think they can effectively deal with healthcare? Scary.

SCOTUS' ruling is shocking, especially that Roberts joined the 4 liberals to uphold this legislation that was passed in such a dastardly fashion. Two other ironies are that: 1) Obama as a senator voted against confirming Roberts to the SCOTUS, and yet here he has been the one to seemingly go against all expectations and 'save Obama's bacon'! 2) That the mandate was "upheld" by the court NOT under the Commerce Clause, but under the notion that congress does have the power to TAX Americans if they don't purchase something, and the PENALTY for not purchasing insurance is ruled to be a "TAX." Obama had repeatedly declared that the penalties under Obamacare for not buying insurance are "not a tax." The "poll" that matters most will be in November, and this overwhelmingly unpopular result today (some 60% of Americans hate Obamacare) will help Romney get elected!
donald warfield July 04, 2012 at 11:24 AM
How about being very specific regarding what in the bill you wish to be replaced to address the freeloaders, the uninsured, those folks with pre-existing health issues denied insurance coverage and stop with the blah blah blah our rights are being trampled, etc. It is scary to me that you complain but yet have not offered a solution.
