Town Clerk's Office: Time to Renew Dog Licenses

Bethel dog owners need to renew their licenses by the end of June.

Today, Bethel dog owners should be receiving postcards in the mail from the reminding them that dog licenses expire Thursday, June 30 and that "new licenses must procured on or before" that date.

To get a new license, residents must include a copy of a valid rabies certificate when dropping off a check or mailing one in. (If mailed in, mail to Town Clerk, 1 School Street, Bethel, CT, 06801).

Male or female, dog licenses are $8 if the pet is spayed or neutered and $19 if they are not.

There will be a $1 penalty per month after a license isn't renewed. The penalty is in accordance to Sec. 22-338, General Statutes of the State of Connecticut and an infraction pursuant to Sec. 22-349.

According to law, all dogs six months or over must be licensed and wear a collar and tag at all times. A dog is presumed to be unlicensed and is not protected by law. A tag must not be used on any dog other than the dog described in the license bearing a corresponding number.

Dog owners are liable for damage done by your dog, including damage to shrubs, flowers and tress. All dogs also must be vaccinated against rabies.

Owners of roaming dogs are liable to prosecution.

The Town Clerk's Office also asks "that dog owners be respectful of their neighbors and clean up after their dogs" when walking them about town.

A copy of the postcard is attached in this article. It also allows Bethel dog owners to notify the Town Clerk's Office of a deceased or new dog. Updated physical information must be provided for the latter.
