Recount Shows Municipal Budget Failed First Referendum

Municipal budget will have to be sent back to voters.

A recount of Thursday’s referendum on the 2014-15 municipal budget overturned the narrow three-vote victory reported on the night of the vote, showing that the town budget actually failed by seven votes.

The 10-vote swing left the final tally at 1,203 in favor to 1,210 against. (The machine count Thursday night had the vote at 1,203-1,200.)

With the reversal, the municipal budget will go back to the Board of Finance for possible revisions before going to the public for a second time.

The education budget was approved in the first vote, 1,206-1,190, passing by 16 votes — four more than needed to trigger an automatic recount.
