Notes from Tuesday's Board of Selectmen Meeting

From the meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

  • In the First Selectman's report, First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker said even though it hasn't snowed over the past few weeks, there are still narrow roads and blocked intersections that need to be cleared. There is still enough money in the highway department's budget in case it should snow again. Knickerbocker also cited good planning and effective use of leftover supplies from the previous year to the maintaining of that budget.
  • Selectman Richard Straiton said the temporary location for ProAccess Teen Center in the municipal center is still coming together. Volunteers generally meet on Wednesdays, but their efforts have been delayed by snow for the past few weeks.
  • Bethel High Track Coach Yvonne Grimes reported to the Board of Selectman that the was officially completed. Though the track was open in November, the $1 million project funded by Grimes' family, was still in the process of the building a storage unit, which is now complete. The track will have an official ribbon cutting to open the BHS track & field season on Mon. April 25 at 3 p.m.
  • The Board of Selectmen removed the request for a personal property tax exemption from the Coronet Machinery Corporation from the agenda. The business missed the deadline to exempt from the tax back in 2010. Knickerbocker and the other selectmen agreed that taking the time to grant the exemption was too costly for the town, as a special town meeting would have to be sent up.
  • A consideration for a fines and citations ordinance was tables by the board. It plans to consider the ordinance after budget presentations.
  • The board approved the consideration of the Town Tax Collector's request for authorize the tax refund, as well as the resolution to approve the Lyme and Other Tick-Born Disease Prevention Study Grant.
