Irene Aid Tops $5 Mil; 1 Month Left to Apply

With only a month left for residents to apply, the federal government has awarded more than $5 million in aid to individuals.

Federal assistance to Connecticut residents affected by Tropical Storm Irene stands at about $5 million with only a month left to apply for the aid program, according to the governor's office on Monday.

Across the state, 6,435 people have registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to see if they qualify for assistance associated with Tropical Storm Irene damage, Gov. Dannel Malloy said in a press release.

The deadline to register for the aid and begin the process is Nov. 3.

Nearly all of the $5 million in federal assistance has gone to help homeowners and renters repair damage to their primary residence not covered by insurance to make the home "safe, sanitary and functional," rent temporary housing and help replace homes destroyed by the storm.

About $300,000 went to pay for disaster-related medical and dental costs, disaster-related funeral and burial costs, and other expenses related to the storm as determined by FEMA, officials said.
