First Selectman Warns of CL&P Scam

If a person comes to your door claiming to be from CL&P, take note of this scam.

First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker is warning Bethel residents of a scam that has been happening post-Irene.

"CL&P issued a press release earlier today alerting residents to be aware of possible 'scam' activity related to storm recovery in the New London area, and I urge all Bethel residents to be alert," he said.

A description of the scam follows, taken from a call to the CL&P Customer Service Department:

“A person came to my door claiming that they work for Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) and that CL&P has lost customer data due to Hurricane Irene.  I was asked to provide a copy of my utility bill. What should I do?”

  • CL&P representatives do not solicit door to door and are not requesting copies of customer's bills.
  • All CL&P employees carry company-issued, photo identification badges. If the individual claims to be from CL&P, ask to see their photo identification badge.
  • Do not show or give your electric bill or any utility bill to anyone.  There is a great deal of personal information on your bill and identity theft is a major problem.
  • If you are approached by anyone claiming to be from Connecticut Light & Power and asking to see your utility bill, contact your local police. You can also file a report with the Consumer Services Section of the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control by calling 1-800-382-4586."

Any Bethel residents who experience any similar activity are advised to immediately call the Bethel Police Department.
