Families of Newtown Victims Pen Letter Urging Gun Reform

'In the midst of our anguish we have learned about the dangerous loopholes in our nation’s gun laws and we are compelled to speak out to save others from suffering what we have endured,' reads a portion of the letter.

Thirty-two family members of victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy -- including 20 family members of slain Newtown teacher Victoria Soto -- sent a letter to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday as they resumed their markup of gun bills.

The family members called on Congress to require background checks on all gun sales, limit military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and make gun trafficking a federal crime.

The full letter follows, and also is attached as a PDF in the gallery right.

Dear Chairman Leahy and Senators Grassley, Blumenthal, and Murphy:

We are 32 family members of victims who were killed in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012 – innocent children and their educators responsibly going about their day.

No one can describe our pain and the brutal day-to-day emotions we suffer. No one can bring our loved ones back and no one from our community of Newtown, Connecticut will ever go back to “normal.”

In the midst of our anguish we have learned about the dangerous loopholes in our nation’s gun laws and we are compelled to speak out to save others from suffering what we have endured. We are writing today to express our deep conviction and support for the President’s plan to reduce gun violence in America.

Specifically we are asking members of Congress to:

1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America that includes a review of all disqualifying records and meaningful record keeping for all sales – in the same manner that Federally licensed dealers are currently required;

2. Ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines; and

3. Make gun trafficking a federal crime, with real penalties for straw purchasers;

The epidemic of injury and death from gun violence is a plague on America, especially since the toll it takes on our families is preventable. Our nation’s families deserve to be safe and free in their schools, movie theaters, workplaces and their homes. We ask Congress, in honor and memory of our loved ones, to support the measures that the President has put forward to help stem the epidemic of gun violence.

Our precious children and family members who were so brutally murdered on December 14th deserve nothing less.

Sincerely,

1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America that includes a review of all disqualifying records OK, can live with that
and meaningful record keeping for all sales – in the same manner that Federally licensed dealers are currently required; no, registration of long guns is a prelude to confiscation 2. Ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines; and Standard capacity magazines for pistols are often as high as 20, "style" is irrelevant, the AR-style is not a military weapon, it's a plain rifle with a handle 3. Make gun trafficking a federal crime, with real penalties for straw purchasers; YES! Eric Holder (Mr. Fast and Furious) is the nations most notorious trafficker, and should be in jail WHERE in this emotional and grief filled letter is a recommendation for institutionalizing the dangerous mentally ill? Had Lanza been put away, none of these families would have suffered their terrible loss

"Dangerous Loopholes"
1. AR15's are scary-looking, so they must be banned 2. High-capacity magazines are enablers for guns to be used, so they must be banned 3. Private citizens conducting private business selling guns privately is an evil, so it must be banned The only thing dangerous here is this letter, rife with hyper-emotionalism. Adam Lanza killed those innocents. And now he's dead. Forcing and/or seeking stricter gun control measures will do nothing to alleviate the pain of Sandy Hook. Nothing.

And "High Capacity" sugary soft drinks are scary too. What next?

I wonder which anti-gun interest group ghost authored this letter?

Dan Baum. Liberal. Gun owner. Pro-gun. Mother Jones interview. Amazing. He says all the things that make the anti-gun crowd uncomfortable.

Looks like Matty and Aquarion have a little pre-decision propaganda campaign going on. Shameless.

Let's see, the Bureau of Economic Analysis rated Connecticut's economy the worst in the nation andRead More this is the type of legislation we are to expect from and congratulate our legislators for? Nice priorities, Dave. Now that you have such a victory under your belt, what are you going to do about the economic mess we're in? http://www.newstimes.com/news/article/Connecticut-s-economy-worst-in-nation-4583083.php

Maybe the reason we have such economic problems is that it literally takes an act of Congress toRead More allow kids to go swim in a place where people have been swimming for 50 years. Note that the reason the beach was closed (geese) is still a problem, still causes beach closings and plane crashes, yet no one can do anything about it apparently!

These clowns find time to pass swimming legislation, legislation restricting gun rights and accessRead More to public information....but they can't pass legislation to help our state's economy, the worst in the nation. Davey and his pals have had enough fun in Hartford. It's time for a change.
