Police Identify Car, Driver in Fatal Cycling Accident

Police withhold releasing identity to the public, citing an ongoing investigation.

Bethel police reported Thursday afternoon that they have identified the vehicle that left the scene of the fatal motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 302 and Hawleyville Road that took the life of a Weston cyclist on Oct. 20.

The operator of the vehicle at the time of the accident has also been identified, however police are not yet releasing the driver’s identity, as the investigation is ongoing.

According to police, 59-year-old Thomas Steinert-Threlkeld was riding his bike west through the intersection when the vehicle knocked into him, causing him to swerve and fall.

Another vehicle coming around the turn struck Steinert-Threlkeld, causing fatal injuries.

The first vehicle fled the scene and police have been searching for information about the car and its driver since.
