A Bethel man was arrested after leading on a chase following a motor vehicle accident in Georgetown on Wednesday, March 7, police said.
Kevin Cleary, 49, Milwaukee Ave, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, evading responsibility after a motor vehicle crash, engaging police in a pursuit, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, speeding and following too closely.
According to police, Cleary was heading east on Redding Road (Route 107) when he rear-ended the vehicle in front of him, which had come to a stop. He then fled the scene, police said.
"Cleary fled the scene and was spotted by another Redding Officer traveling into
the center of Redding on [Route 107]," Chief Douglas Fuchs wrote in a press release. "When Cleary saw the officer he fled and was ultimately stopped by police on Gallows Hill Road."
Clearly failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody with a blood alcohol level of approximately twice the legal limit, according to police. He was found to be in possession of a loaded semi-automatic handgun.
No injuries were reported, though Cleary's vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage, police said.
He was released on $500 bond and given a court date later this month.
