Police: Man Arrested, Tasered After Hitting Officer

A man and his wife were arrested Sunday afternoon after police say he violated a protective order.

After a man violated a protective order placed by his wife, police say an escalating domestic incident led to the man being tased after striking a police officer.

Jeffrey Woodward, 58, of Brewster, NY, was arrested at about 5:21 p.m. Sunday for the alleged incident at a home on Greenwood Ave he co-owned with his wife, police say. He was charged with a criminal attempt at assault on a police officer, violation of a protective order and interfering with an officer.

Police also arrested his wife, Clare Woodward, for her actions after she allegedly walked into a fellow tenant's home, refused to leave, and later broke windows in a detached garage with a hammer, according to the Danbury News-Times. According to police, Jeffrey went to the home after getting a call from his daughter, a tenant at the home, about Clare's actions. Police say the two are married but separated.

Police say they had already decided to arrest Clare Woodward when her husband arrived. Appearing intoxicated, according to reports, he allegedly "became beligerent" and refused to cooperate with police.

As police investigated whether his presence was a violation of the protective order, he allegedly "began walking from the property, and was told to stop and place his hands behind his back, which he refused to do." At that point, police say, officers tried to handcuff him, and he swung his free arm, striking an officer in the face.

After being tased and subdued, according to reports, Woodward was taken to police headquarters and released on $10,000 bond.

Information on arrests is provided by the Bethel Police Department. Arrests are not indications of guilt and do not imply conviction.
