Police: Bethel Man Arrested After Taking Ex-Wife's Car

The man was charged with assault and other charges after the alleged August 10 incident.

A Bethel man was arrested for assault and other charges after forcibly making off with his ex-wife's car and fleeing to Danbury, according to reports released Sunday from the Bethel Police Department.

Police say Ernesto Rodrigues, 44, of Maple Row showed up at his ex-wife's house on the morning of August 10 and demanded she give him the keys to her car. When she told him to leave and tried to go to a neighbor's house to call 911, he allegedly grabbed her by the hair and tried to force her in the car -- "preventing the call to police and causing injuries," police said.

Rodriguez fled to Danbury, police said, and was arrested at about 6:26 a.m. and taken back to the Bethel Police Department. He is charged with first-degree unlawful restraint, taking a vehicle with an owner's permission, interfering with an emergency call and third-degree assault.

Information is provided by the Bethel Police Department. Arrests are not indications of guilt.
