Fatal Accident Temporarily Shuts Down I-84 Wednesday [Updated]

Connecticut State Police say the man may have intentionally walked into traffic.

A fatal accident on Interstate 84 in Danbury Wednesday afternoon brought traffic to a standstill for nearly three hours.

According to Connecticut State Police, I-84 westbound was closed at exit 6 to investigate the death of a pedestrian who was reportedly struck by a tractor trailer truck around 1 p.m.

Connecticut State Police said the victim, a 52-year-old Connecticut man whose identify has not been released, may have walked into traffic intentionally. Police said he was reportedly saying things consistent with people considering suicide.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Connecticut State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance.

Nearly three hours after the accident, traffic was still crawling through the I-84 corridor and spilling onto local roads, from Oxford to Bethel. A reported three-vehicle accident near Exit 9 in Newtown at about 4:30 p.m. added to that congestion as the evening commute approached.
