DUI Results in Backyard Chase

The information below was provided by the Bethel Police Department. Neither arrests nor charges indicate a conviction, and neither means that a person is guilty of what police allege.

At approximately 11:00 p.m. on August 30, Bethel Police responded to a one car motor vehicle crash on Hickok  Ave.  Upon arrival, officers determined that the driver, Vincent Gaita, 45, Dodgingtown Rd, Bethel, had fled the scene on foot.  A short time later, Gaita was located in a yard on Maple Ave.  He began to run and broke a section of fence when he jumped over it.

Gaita continued running towards Cindy Lane despite the officer’s commands to stop.  After a check of the area, officers went to 4 Oxford St where Gaita once lived and spoke with his relatives.

The relatives denied that Gaita was at the house, and stated that the only people home were on the back porch. However, police saw a man inside the home.

Police were able to visually locate Gaita in the basement, but even after the officer’s repeated verbal commands, Giata refused to come out.  The police statement states they gave Gaita a significant amount of time to come out before they went down into the basement and took Gaita into custody.

He was transported to Bethel Police Headquarters where he was routinely processed and charged with DUI, Evading Responsibility in a Motor Vehicle Crash, Failure to Keep Right on a Curve, Criminal Mischief 3rd, and Interfering With An Officer.

Gaita was held on a $2,500 bond and was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on August 31 at 10 a.m.
