Car Fire Spreads to Prospect Street Home, Leaves Family Displaced

Residents escaped safely; firefighter suffers minor injury battling blaze.

Bethel firefighters knocked down a blaze on Prospect Street Sunday evening that left the residents without a place to sleep but with their lives and health in tact.

A vehicle parked in the driveway at 20 Prospect Street caught fire shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday, according to Bethel Fire Marshal Thomas Galliford. The fire spread to the siding of the house and eventually made its way inside through the attic.

The residents were able to get out of the house safely and no injuries were reported.

One Bethel firefighter was brought to the hospital for a minor ankle injury, Galliford said, but was released within an hour.

Emergency responders received the call at 4:24 p.m. and were able to knock down the main fire within 20 minutes. The scene was cleared by 6:30 p.m.

Galliford said the cause of the fire is still under investigation but appears to be accidental.

“The house looks like it is repairable but the family will be displaced for a bit,” he said, noting that the Red Cross was there to assist on Sunday and that the residents will be staying with friends for the time being.
