Bethel Firefighters Extinguish Van in Flames Outside Target

Large van catches fire after parking in shopping center on Stony Hill Road Wednesday.

Bethel firefighters responded to a 10-passenger van in flames in the parking lot in front of Target on Stony Hill Road Wednesday afternoon.

Two tanker trucks responded from the Stony Hill Department up the road shortly after 3 p.m. and were able to put out the fire quickly, according to Fire Marshal Thomas Galliford.

The van had just parked and everyone had gotten out before it caught fire, Galliford said, and there were no injuries reported.

Bethel police also responded to help direct traffic in the area while the blaze was extinguished, though the van was parked toward the rear of the parking area, keeping the fire away from other vehicles and motorists.

Galliford said the cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to be a mechanical issue.
