Authorities Investigating Bogus Hundred Dollar Bills

Two Monroe stores were victimized and police are working on the case in conjunction with the U.S. Secret Service.

Monroe police detectives and the U.S. Secret Service are investigating how $1,400 worth of counterfeit one hundred dollar bills were passed at two town businesses. Police said the bogus bills were discovered when the merchants tried to deposit the cash at the branch on Monroe Turnpike Monday morning.

Lt. Brian McCauley said the names of the stores that were victimized cannot be released at this point in the investigation.

"It was a very good counterfeit, difficult to detect," he said Tuesday.

McCauley said both businesses did their due diligence in checking the legitimacy of the bills, including the marker test and using a scanning machine that is supposed to detect a fake. But he said no bills raised any red flags until the bank's currency counting machine rejected it.
