Knickerbocker and Boughton Work Together to Fight Cancer

Report and Photography by Paula Antolini

Bethel's First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker and Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton joined forces on the Bethel High School track this past Thursday, April 3, 2014, to "make it to the finish line" to find a cure for cancer and to support the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life fundraising event.

This past weekend was also the "PAINT THE TOWN PURPLE" event to spread awareness about the importance of supporting this cause and to participate in the upcoming Relay for Life this June 13-14, 2014 in Bethel.

Bethel's First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker said, "Cancer affects all of us. I do not know a single family that has not been touched by it, either through the loss of a family member or someone special in our community. The Bethel High running track where the Relay for Life is held carries a dedication to a young athlete who lost his battle with cancer just a few short years ago. We are making a difference.  More people are beating this disease than ever before, and there is so much promising new research under way that's putting cancer on the run. But we still have a long way to go. I thank the dedicated volunteers who work so hard every year to sponsor this event, and I invite everyone in our town to join us in this fight."

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said, "I am proud to support the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life events taking place in our area and nationally this weekend. I am inspired by stories of survival and loss, and I urge our residents to do what they can to support cancer awareness through participation or by raising funds for the cause."

Every Bethel business owner who was asked to display a Relay for Life poster and purple ribbon this past weekend during the "PAINT THE TOWN PURPLE" event graciously agreed.  A community working together to fight cancer!  YES!  Let's win this fight and get to the finish line to find a cure!

There is still time to form your own team!
