As Ct Families File Taxes: Murphy and Blumenthal Ask IRS To Crack Down On Predatory Tax Preparers
Posted by Paula Antolini
HARTFORD – At 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 2014, U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) will visit the Hartford Public Library, located at 500 Main Street, to call on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to crack down on predatory tax preparers.
Recent reports have shed light on deceptive and fraudulent practices by certain tax preparers that intentionally prey on low-income communities. For example, these preparers mislead filers by telling them their tax refund is much higher than it is, then charge the filer a higher amount for tax preparation services based on this inflated estimate.
Murphy and Blumenthal will be joined by Galo Rodriguez of Village for Families and Children, and Maura Cook of United Way, to discuss how this problem has affected the people they work with and raise awareness about the secure tax preparation sites in Connecticut.
