Protect the Bethel Sycamore
Bethel residents take note: A historic sycamore on West Wooster Street in Danbury is slated to be cut down very soon (http://www.ctpost.com/default/article/Old-sycamore-slated-for-removal-5461391.php). This tree - the 4th largest sycamore in the state - does not appear to be unhealthy or directly endangering the nearby power lines. Katharine Matthies, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, included this tree in her 1934 book, Trees of Note in Connecticut. According to Matthies, this tree was a "witness" to the British retreat from Danbury during the Revolutionary War. Hopefully this historic tree can be spared. If the Danbury tree gets cut down, it could set a precedent that would also apply to the Bethel sycamore, which is also close to the power lines. Bethel's stately landmark sycamore is the 2nd largest in the state; the largest is the famous Pinchot sycamore in Simsbury.
