Obituary: Elizabeth T. Hurgin

Elizabeth "Betty" T. Hurgin dies at the age of 92.

Elizabeth "Betty" T. Hurgin, died peacefully on Sunday, March 4, 2012. She was born September 25, 1920 in Danbury, daughter of Francis and Sarah (Bowler) Paquette.

She grew up in Danbury and was a graduate of Danbury High School class of 1940. In her early years Betty worked at Bard Parkers. She was especially proud of the time she spent as a nurse's aide during the years of World War II.

On June 17, 1950 she married Francis E. Hurgin, who predeceased her in 1984. They moved their family to Bethel in 1952. When her children were older she was employed by the Bethel School system in the cafeteria where she enjoyed the students and her family of co-workers.

She was an active member of the Council of Catholic Women for many years. Most important to her was caring for her family. She loved to bake, supplying her friends and family with delicious treats. She also enjoyed needlework, ceramics and word puzzles. Betty was fond of singing and always had a song for any occasion. Perhaps her greatest attribute was her love of laughter. She knew how to find the fun in life. She always believed to cry your tears, dry your eyes and move on. Hold no grudges and have no regrets.

Betty will be sadly missed by her daughter: Mary J. Maier and her husband William of Sherman, CT; her sons: Francis "Sparky" Hurgin and his wife Helen of Windham, ME and Thomas Hurgin of Bethel, CT and her beloved grandchildren: Nicole Maier, Liam Maier, Daniel Maier, Lauren Maier, Marta Hurgin, Max Hurgin, Justin Hurgin and his wife Julie and Brad Hurgin and his fiancee Heather Gebert. "Bethel teachers are not only educating students, but when society lets kids down, it’sRead More teachers who step in to fill the gap." Explain to me how an average salary of $60,000 per year for working 183 days during that year and an EXTREMELY generous retirement package (compared to the 240 a year the rest of us have to work) considered "society letting them down"?
