Winter Storm Update: Tuesday Afternoon - Continue to Practice Safe Driving Today

Freezing rain and dangerous icing continues.

Update, Tuesday Afternoon:
At 1 p.m.: The temperature in Bethel has risen to 31 degrees, which means that freezing rain is continuing. The icing conditions have been going on for several hours, which means a thick layer of ice is causing a lot of problems out on roads.

Rest of today: Periods of freezing rain will continue through the afternoon hours. High temperatures are slowly approaching the freezing mark, but are only expected to rise another degree or two. Even if readings briefly go above 32 degrees, conditions will still be very slippery outside. The freezing rain will taper off to some spotty freezing drizzle by this evening. Please give yourself plenty of extra time if you must travel today.

Tuesday: Freezing rain. High: 32.

The Bethel area experienced a calm before the storm earlier today. Another winter storm is quickly approaching and will begin to affect the region after midnight.

Overnight: Some light snow will move into the area around or shortly after midnight. The snow will continue overnight, but towards the morning commute is when things get interesting. By the time of the morning commute, two to four inches of snow is expected to be on the ground.

Tuesday morning: The snow will quickly change to sleet and then freezing rain, right around the morning rush hour. Travel will be heavily impacted and that freezing rain will continue all morning. Temperatures will slowly rise through the 20s, but that means that ice will continue to accumulate.

Rest of Tuesday: The freezing rain will continue through the afternoon and it may be heavy at times. The precipitation will taper off to freezing drizzle later in the day. With highs forecast right around 32 degrees, the freezing rain is expected to cause significant problems. Areas southeast of here, especially along the shoreline, will not see as much ice. For the Bethel area, anywhere from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of solid ice accumulation is expected. This may cause some trees and power lines to come down, due to the weight of the heavy ice.
