Tornado Watch in Effect in New Fairfield County, Northeast

The National Weather Service's alert is in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service is reporting a tornado watch in effect until 8 p.m. tonight for several states across the North East including New Fairfield Countiy in Connecticut.

In southern Massachusetts, in the Westfield and West Springfield areas, a tornado reportedly touched down, according to television station WWLP, which caught the tornado on live camera.

During the station's live broadcast at 5 p.m., WWLP reported the tornado touched down around 4:20 p.m. and went over the Connecticut River. WWLP said roofs have been ripped off of houses.

The tornado watch remains in effect for New Haven, Fairfield, Litchfield, Windham and Tolland counties. Specifically in Bethel, the NWS is expecting mostly cloudy skies during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 54. West wind between 6 and 10 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. 

Attached is a tornado safety checklist from Connecticut's Red Cross Chapter. In it, the Red Cross cites dark, greenish clouds, large hail and roaring thunder/noises as signs of a tornado.
