Planning for Summer, Part 1

Hmm......What should we do with the kids this summer? A few books to help decide. Stay tuned for more next week!

Before I begin, I have to admit that this blog did not go as originally planned. I rely on the network of public libraries in the area for many of the books I read. I’m sure most of you know this, but you can easily request books from other Connecticut libraries to be sent right to your local library for you to pick up. It’s free and convenient.

Beginning last week, however, this service has been temporarily unavailable because the area libraries are changing to a new, improved computer system.  There are several books I was unable to locate, and some of the books I did find were not what I expected or wanted. So I may decide to continue with this theme next week.

Now, on with our regularly scheduled blog.

Believe it or not, it is June.  School is ending soon, and something will have to be done with those kids.  Whether you are keeping them home or packing them off to camp, here are some ideas.

I was excited to see they have the rules for Spud in this book.  I remember playing Spud as a kid, but couldn’t remember the rules.  This book includes hundreds of games we all forgot how to play, or never knew how.  Games for groups, games for one, indoor games, outdoor games, card games, you name it.  “Kids Summer Games” is a great resource for any time of the year.

“So You’re Off to Summer Camp”
Margaret Queen
Illustrated by Margaret H. Matens
Publisher:
Walnut Grove (January 1, 2010)
ISBN-13:
978-1882959501

This is a small book with 288 short tips for kids going away to camp.  Tips include the useful Tip 5:  “Put on fresh socks and underwear every day.  Just because they still look white does not mean they are clean.”  Most kids won’t need Tip 175: “Never skip dessert.”  And the ever important Tip 1:  “Good friends are worth their weight in gummy worms.”  This book is a good small gift for a kid going away to camp this summer.

“Parent’s and Kid’s Complete Guide to Summer Camp Fun
Penny Warner
Publisher:
Prima Lifestyles; 1st edition (May 28, 2002)
ISBN-13: 978-0761537465

Sending your child to sleep-away camp is a scary thought for most parents.  I am certainly not planning to do so for another few thousand years.  But if your child is ready, this book is a good resource.  It is divided into two parts.  The first half is written for parents, and gives advice on how to choose a camp, how to prepare your child for camp and how to deal with homesickness.  The second half is for the child to read.  There is a section about homesickness here too, as well as tips on how to make friends, and many suggestions for activities to make their stay at camp as fun as possible.

Next week, road trips!
