Health & Fitness

There has been much research done on the connection between social support networks and the well-being & good health of the elderly.

As people age, their social networks usually decrease due to death, serious illness or relocation.  Maintaining ties with just one other person is a critical component of successful aging.
Fewer older people share the same housing with their children but being involved with a family network provides emotional and material support.  Having children may allow elderly parents to avoid or at least delay long-term hospitalization and nursing homes.
The above information is good news, but what about the older people who are alone or living far from family?  The state of Ct. Municipal Agent Program assures that the elderly in each town have an official appointed town representative.  These representatives are familiar with Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), Social Security, legal services, transportation and more.
Senior Centers focus on the positive images of aging.  Services may include emotional counseling, health screenings, exercise & dance groups, creative activities and education.
Having friends and neighbors are a valuable source of support for the elderly, just as they are for everyone.  So call or visit an elderly neighbor, you might make a new friend, you'll make their day brighter and yours too.
