Education for Seniors

"Stay young, keep learning"

There are many educational opportunities for seniors in CT.  If you are over 62 years old, you can attend any state university or college for free if just auditing a course.  There is a small fee for an accredited class and it does depend on space available.

Another option is the Lifetime Learners Institute located at Norwalk Community College.  It's a great place to learn, stay within your budget and socialize.

A twelve month membership is $40 and that includes spring, fall and winter terms.  In the spring and fall, members can enroll in courses for $25 per course (so many choices, art, history, language, gardening & many more).  The winter session offers 5 weeks of varied classes and they are all free.  On Fridays, there are Brown Bag Lunch & Learn lectures and performances in the afternoon.

There is something exciting about starting a new class, especially if there are no tests given.  Fresh pens, new notebooks and in my case freshly sharpened pencils and a giant sketchpad for my drawing class.  The skills of the student are varied and our teacher Frank Foster Post, a professional artist, is patient, supportive and fun.  His mission is to take the mystery out of drawing.

Last Friday, our Lunch and Learn speaker was Dr. Pramila Nathan who is a practicing psychiatrist and on the weekends devotes her time to the development of the Hindu Cultural Center in Stamford.  Dr. Nathan presented a wonderful and informative overview of Hinduism. Before the lecture, light refreshments were served and I was able to speak to many attendees who raved about Lifetime Learners (a lively & friendly group).

Take a class, make some new friends and it you want, make a day of it.  Norwalk has great shopping, the Lockwood mansion and the Maritime Center (great for Imax junkies).  Hope to see some Bethelites there next semester.
