What's a Juice Barre? Find Out at This New Bethel Business

The Juice Barre offers a healthy alternative.

When new parents Marcelle and Nicholas Tiffany watched the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, it marked a change in their lives.

For one thing, Nicholas decided to get in shape. He started juicing -- that's the creation of healthy fruit and vegetable juices advocated by the documentary -- and lost, in his wife's words, a ton of weight.

Another big change: it motivated them to open their own business, the Juice Barre on Barnum Square. Neither had ever done anything like this -- Marcelle was a hairdresser and Nicholas was a gym coach -- but they felt their calling.

"We had just started getting into healthy eating lifestyle, and there was nothing around," said Marcelle, who runs the business along with Nicholas. "Already, a lot of people who did it at home have come in and said, 'We needed this.'"

The Juice Barre offered a variety of healthy juice mixes made from carrots, kale, celery, beets and many other fruits and vegetables.

"Some people come in who have never tried this kind of thing," said Marcelle. "They'll say, 'I don't want a beet juicer! It sounds gross!' Then they try it -- and they love it."

After hours, the Juice Barre will become a workout spot -- Marcelle says she hasn't started her Beyond Barre workout classes yet, but expects they'll begin in July.

"The idea is, you can work out and then you can get something healthy," said Marcelle. "A lot of people work out and go to McDonald's -- and that doesn't make much sense."
