Fourteen Threadless Needles: Photographs by Vito Pasquale

Still River Editions, 128 E Liberty St, Danbury, CT

Find out what's happening in Bethelwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Vito Pasquale is a photographer and writer from Mount Kisco, NY.

Many of Pasquale’s photographs are abstracts and photo-manipulations that go beyond taking the world at face value. In his poem, “(Somewhere) After Silence (and) Before Regret”,  Pasquale refers to “. . .the surprisingly elastic properties of a dream.” The photographs dance around that dream-state in the everyday. His book of poetry, Fourteen Threadless Needles, was published in 2011.

Pasquale says about his photographs, “I believe it is healthy to have a casual disregard for authority.  In some cases it might even be necessary to have a determined disregard – please don’t tell my kids. In any case, the sky that is saturated and yellow, the off-kilter street scene, the blackened hills, the something there is that doesn’t love a happy ending, these are the approaches that I take.  I believe in the pretty picture, but only if it’s very, very pretty, which means it’s probably a flower and the bloom is fading away.”

Tom Chapin in Concert with Young Rising Stars

Grammy award winner Tom Chapin, nationally acclaimed folk singer/songwriter, will perform once again in a family concert at Newtown High School in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, Sunday, March 25, 2012 at 3PM.

Leading young performers throughout the county including The Fairfield County Children’s Choir under the leadership of Maestro Jon Noyes of Orange, jazz violinist Sam Weiser of Westport, classical guitarist Yossi Kohrman-Glaser of Newtown and other rising stars will open for and perform with Mr. Chapin.  The concert is produced by “The Little House that Roared,” a program of Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown, Connecticut.

“I’m excited to come back to Newtown and perform with these wonderful young musicians,” said Mr. Chapin.  Chapin performed at the High School last year to an audience of 650, and is returning this year due to popular demand.  “Now that everybody knows that last year’s concert was a smash hit, we are anticipating selling every seat in the house well in advance of the event, so get your tickets while you can!” said Rabbi Shaul Praver of Congregation Adath Israel.  The Little House That Roared is Praver’s brain child and Praver’s good fortune was meeting up with a highly talented and dedicated committee who share the bond of music. Several of the committee members are involved in music professionally.

“We started The Little House That Roared series three years ago as a showcase for highly talented young musicians,” said Praver.  “I guess we strummed the right chord because now we’re putting these kids on the same stage with Tom Chapin. “We believe wholesome, inter-generational live family entertainment is a really good thing for Newtown and the county, said Curtis Urbina of Quark Records and TLHTR committee member.

In addition to Chapin’s solid guitar picking, clever song lyrics and authoritative vocal performance, Mr. Chapin is known for using his music to advance important causes.   For example, Mr. Chapin “testified” before the New York State Senate by singing his song, You Can’t Spell Smart without Art.  Mr. Chapin was advocating to reinstate funding for the Arts in New York State. Chapin’s current CD, “Give Peas a Chance,” advocates for locally grown food and improved nutritional provisions in schools throughout the country.

To purchase tickets, log onto: http://thelittlehousethatroared.ticketleap.com/tomchapinwithyoungrisingstars, or purchase tickets at Dunkin Donuts 6 Queen Street Newtown CT. or call 203-209-4662

This Weekend! Grease Sing-A-Long Coming To Palace Danbury Theatre

Grease is the original high school musical. Now, 34 years after it was first released by Paramount Pictures, the hit film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, is back in theaters in a newly restored sing-a-long version. It's like having karaoke at the movies!

On March 24 at 8:00 p.m., for one night only, The Palace Danbury will host a special screening of the film, Grease, customized with animated subtitles. The entire audience can join in the fun by singing along with some of the most memorable songs in motion picture history--songs like “You’re The One That I Want,” ”Hopelessly Devoted To You,” and “Go Greased Lightning.”

To complete the Grease Sing-a-Long experience, audience members are invited to dress in their fifties finest. It's time to iron your poodle skirt and shine up your saddle shoes, roll up those dungarees and put on your black leather jacket. You can even wear your prom dress, because The Palace will be choosing their own Palace Prom Queen and King!

Grease premiered in 1978 and continues to be one of the highest grossing movie musicals of all time. The film is rated PG-13 and has a running time of 110 minutes. The Sing-A-Long version has sold out in Austin, Los Angeles, New York, Ocala, San Diego, and San Francisco. Not bad for a 34 year old movie!

Contact: Carol Spiegel/Outreach Director, carol@thepalacedanbury.com 203 794-9944

Danbury, Conn –Celebrate the artistry of John Lennon! On April 13, The Nutopians, a unique and compelling eight-piece ensemble, will honor his musical genius at The Palace Danbury.

Created and led by Rex Fowler of Aztec Two-Step and Tom Dean of Devonshire, this extraordinary ensemble gives fresh treatments to Lennon’s best and least known Beatles and solo song compositions, often inspiring a whole new appreciation for the music.

“With these intelligent heartfelt renditions of John Lennon's songs, The Nutopians ranks right up there with the very best Lennon interpreters ever.” - Pete Fornatale,  WFUV, New York

Concertgoers will hear impressive lead singing, three-part harmonies and entertaining storytelling, plus a host of talented musicians on acoustic, electric and bass guitars, cello, violin, piano, mandola, accordion, chromatic harmonica and light percussion.

Formerly The John Lennon Song Project, the band won the Independent Music Award for Best Tribute Album of 2010, an honor bestowed for its CD Imagined, just months after the band’s debut.

The band’s new name was suggested by Yoko Ono to honor Lennon’s social and political activism, and the couple’s fictitious country of peace, ''Nutopia.'' The group actively supports WhyHunger, a leader in the movement to end hunger and poverty by connecting people to nutritious and affordable food.  A portion of proceeds from the ensemble’s performances and CD sales benefit WhyHunger's grassroots effort to inspire self-reliance and community empowerment.

Tickets for The Nutopians are $30 in advance, and $35 at the door. They can be ordered online at www.thepalacedanbury.com or bought at the box office starting at 7:00 PM the night of the performance.
