Preview Pizzeria Lauretano's December Jazz Nights

Bethel's local jazz spot hosts five bands in December.

, located at 291 Greenwood Avenue, hold jazz nights on Sundays from 6-8 p.m. Normally there is a $7.50 (plus a $10 minimum), while occasional Wednesday jazz nights from 6:30-8:30 p.m. has no music fee.  Reservations are strongly recommended by calling the restaurant at 203-792-1500.

The following are events are previews for the month of December:

Sunday, Dec. 5: The Jazz Trio with Special Guest Marvin Stamm    
Marvin Stamm - trumpet, Bill Bickford - guitar, Bill Crow - bass, Roger Post - drums
(Fee: $10) Trumpet great Marvin Stamm is called "a musician's musician" by The Washington Post. The Memphis native was trumpet soloist with the Stan Kenton and Woody Herman bands in the 1960s. He gained considerable recognition for his playing with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra (1966-72) and the Duke Pearson Big Band (1967-70). He also performed with Frank Sinatra and the Benny Goodman Sextet in the 70s, all the while also playing in New York recording studios. Since the late 1980s, Stamm has concentrated his efforts on his own career, working with such top jazz artists as Bill Mays, Bill Charlap, Bob Mintzer and Dena DeRose. In 2009 he also did a European tour with Steely Dan.

Sunday, Dec. 12: Chris Smith and the Caribbean Jazz Quartet
Chris Smith and his Caribbean/Jazz Quartet celebrate the holidays with some island and jazz favorites. Smith will be playing steel drums for this gig, a first at Pizzeria Lauretano.

Sunday, Dec. 19:  Ed Chervansky Quartet
Ed Chervansky - guitar, Steve Moran - sax, Jeff Fuller - acoustic bass, Kurt Berglund - drums
For more than 25 years, guitarist Ed Chervansky has enjoyed considerable time in numerous blues, jazz, funk, rock and country swing bands along the East Coast. He's been influenced by jazz guitarists such as Wes Montgomery and George Benson, as well as by many non-guitar greats including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. On the local scene, Chervansky has played with such standout jazz and blues players as Bobby Buster, Eddie Buster and Jesse "Wild Bill" Austin. With a stellar group of musicians, Chervansky soars on a variety of jazz styles including bebop, Latin and a little funk.

Wednesday, Dec. 22: Jerrod Catey Trio Presents "A Peanuts Christmas"
The Jerrod Catey Trio brings to life the swinging, sparkling music of the Peanuts Christmas TV classic, composed by the incomparable pianist Vince Guaraldi.  Jerrod and friends give us a live concert of these seasonal chestnuts including "Skating," "Linus and Lucy" and "Christmastime is Here." The three young music grads all met while studying at WestConn's jazz program.

Sunday, Dec. 26: Jeff Feldstein Quartet
Guitarist Jeff Feldstein is called "the real deal" by Stan Getz, and Clifford Brown Jr. adds "great chops!" Jeff's exciting and original sets blend Latin, jazz standards, and a deep vein of blues with his own compositions. Raised in New York, Feldstein spent a number of years in the city and in San Francisco honing his skills. He's worked with saxophonists Pharoah Sanders and Larry Schneider and with a "who's who" of rhythm-section players (bassist Peter Washington, pianist Mark Levine, drummer Eddie Marshall).  Jeff's most recent CD is "Hurricane Watch."
