Where Have All Bethel's Children Gone?

Bethel's parks and playgrounds were empty Tuesday, despite the gorgeous weather.

Looking around Bethel on one of the nicest days of an altogether beautiful August, there were no children playing outside.

The playgrounds and fields at Bethel High School, Frank A. Berry School and Anna H. Rockwell Elementary School were empty Tuesday afternoon, as was Parloa Field on South Street.

The ball fields at Mitchell Park were just as vacant, though a man walking the BMX park with his grandson said there were some kids riding their bikes there earlier in the morning.

The great retreat indoors is nothing new. With the advent of television, video games and the ever-more engrossing virtual world online, kids have been playing outside less and less over the years.

But, on a gorgeous, blue-skied day, with the long school year approaching, you would think more children would be taking advantage.

So, where have all the children gone?
