High School Musicians Take Jazz Jams to Barnum Square

Purple Calypso livens up the streets with a modern take on jazz.

Did you catch this high-school duo jamming in Barnum Square yesterday? Several passersby did -- and a few even stopped to get photo and video of their open-air performance.

"We're just playing because we want to play," said saxophonist Ben Fitzpatrick before launching into a solo.

Fitzpatrick and Immaculate High School sophomore Joseph Natal make up Purple Calypso, describing themselves on their Facebook page as "trying to bring jazz back to the forefront of American music."

"We combine jazz standards with our own modern twist to show that all jazz music is modern," they write.

You can check out one of their songs on Soundcloud -- and if you like what you hear, get in touch with them to get their album or see them live at Molten Java August 9.

Barnum Square has become a hot spot for street music this summer, and Purple Calypso are just one of the groups choosing to share their talents and make Bethel more musical.
