Bethel to Shut Off Water in Grassy Plain, Greenwood Area Monday Night

Crews will be shutting down a main line Monday night to investigate water bubbling up from the ground.

The Bethel Water Department will be shutting down the water main on Grassy Plain Street at 10 p.m. Monday in order to investigate and repair a broken pipe at the intersection with Whitney Road.

The shutdown will close pipelines along Grassy Plain Street from Reservoir Street to the Danbury line and Greenwood Ave. from the intersection with Grassy Plain to the Burger King.

This will affect the plaza at the intersection of Routes 302 and 53, residents and businesses on Grassy Plain Street from Reservoir Street west and properties on Drummers Lane, according to Town Engineer Andrew Morosky.

The water main will be shut off for several hours while the repairs are affected but crews should be finished well before 5 a.m., Morosky said.

Residents should also expect some discoloration after the water is turned back on.

“The discoloration is caused by a buildup of harmless sediment inside the water mains,” Morosky said. “This is normal and residents should allow their taps to run until the water clears” once service is restored.

The town is not yet sure what caused the damage to the pipeline.

“We should be able to tell once the pipe is exposed,” Morosky said. “Right now there is just water bubbling out of the ground.”
