Bethel Action Committee Sponsors Press Conference on Water Sale

(July 13, 2013 – Bethel, CT) – The Bethel Action Committee, a taxpayer advocacy group, will hold a press conference on Tuesday, July 16th at 3pm in front of the Clifford Hurgin Municipal Center.

The proposed water supply sale to Aquarion has drawn interest from various regional and national environmental and consumer advocacy groups. Food and Water Watch, Connecticut Fund for the Environment, and Rivers Alliance are among those slated to participate in the July 16th press conference.

These and other groups been very vocal against the privatization of locally-controlled water supplies, and have gone on record as opposing the proposed sale of Bethel’s water supply – calling it “fiscally short-sighted,” an abdication of local leadership and a great example of “kicking the can down the road” for ratepayers to deal with for years to come.

In a recent article published in the NewsTimes, Margaret Miner, Executive Director of Rivers Alliance, expressed concern about the sales agreement, saying transferring ownership of water company land back to a town, along with three reservoirs, is so complicated it might need another step. “It might need an act of the legislature,'” she said.
