Acclaimed Jazz Vocalist Accepting New Students in Bethel

Cynthia McCorkindale, longtime Bethel resident and critically acclaimed singer, is currently accepting new students in her Bethel studio.

Proficient in many vocal styles, but perhaps best known as a jazz artist, Cynthia focuses on how to maintain proper breath support and vocal tone while improvising and executing jazz phrasing, which can often be challenging because of the various stylings and rhythmic accuracy that the genre demands.

While the “bel canto” style of singing lends itself easily to even airflow  and timbre, vocal jazz phrasing and improvisation often require the singer to frequently change up the rhythm and tone, depending on whether the song is a swing tune, bossa nova or ballad. Cynthia’s technique has proven to be very effective for singers who may have already had some classical training and are interested in singing jazz, or for singers who currently perform with a band and want to develop more of a jazz style.

Cynthia McCorkindale has two CDs to her credit. Her most recent, “Bistro Blue,” features songs from the Great French Songbook, and was selected by National Public Radio for “All Songs Considered.” Of her debut CD, “Meant to be Blue,” a smoky jazz collection, the legendary Dave Brubeck wrote: “Cynthia sings wonderful classic songs, sounds great performing them in an intimate and highly personal style, and surrounds herself with first-rate musicians.” Over the years she has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Mr. Brubeck, Bill Mays, Ted Rosenthal, and Michael Moore at a variety of concerts and clubs. For several years lived and performed in France. She has also lent her vocal talent to various independent film projects, as well as jingles and television spots for The Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and The Cartoon Network.
