Molten Java is 'Brewing' On Up

Bethel coffeehouse heads to bigger space at 213 Greenwood Ave.

It's moving time for Molten Java Coffee Roasters.

The popular Bethel coffeehouse and roasting company is moving down the road from its current location at 102 Greenwood Ave. to a bigger space in an old Victorian style house at 213 Greenwood Ave. at the entrance to Dolan Plaza.

“Molten has needed a larger space to accommodate our events and customers for a long time,” said Wendy Cahill owner of Molten Java. “I was approached by the owners of Dolan Plaza a few months back and their enthusiasm made it clear that this was the right time and place for that change.”

Cahill added: “The space is approximately twice as large. [It] will have the same eclectic feel but the space is brand new, sunny and there are separate rooms to allow for more activities as well as space to just meet with friends for dinner and coffee. The coffee roasters will be larger and in view for people to watch the roasting process.”

In addition Cahill is trying to get approval from the town for a morning drive through on the side of the house. The upstairs of the new location will serve as a new bookstore, Byrd's Books which is owned by Alice Hutchinson.

There it not yet a set date for the move as Cahill is still working on getting permits and finishing renovating the space, but the move will come relatively soon.

Molten Java opened at its current location eight years ago and quickly became a popular Bethel hangout where local musicians would regularly perform. The new location originally served as the headquarters for the Dolan family's fuel company.

The side drive through window that Cahill hopes to use to serve coffee was originally used to collect checks from the Dolan's costumers. Though it is a Victorian style house the back of the house, is connected to a more standard shopping center building that houses, Subway, and .

Bob Gleason, who owns Dolan Plaza along with Gary Michael, said: “When we remodeled the building about five or six years ago we always had thought that it would be a great place for a coffeehouse, we even approached Starbucks.”

Starbucks originally expressed interest in the space but the deal fell through. In recent years the location housed William Pitt Real Estate but when the space became vacant Gleason immediately thought of Molten Java.

“I've always been a costumer at Molten Java, I think she (Cahill) has a great shop,” he said. Now he said he's excited to have her open up at the front of Dolan Plaza.

“I can just picture people sitting on that front porch having coffee,” he said.

Gleason's not the only person looking forward to the new space. Cahill said everyone she speaks to is excited about the move.

“I honestly can't imagine a better place to follow such a huge dream. People are definitely excited for a larger more comfortable space,” she said. “We are, with this new space, committed to providing a community space that everyone can enjoy."
